For the guy particularly, there is the opportunity for endless variations on this exercise. He can, for example, change to twisting crunches (twisting his torso to one side and then the other as he sits up) to work his obliques. Or, he can work a completely different muscle group by using dumbbells to perform “flies”—holding a weight in each hand with arms extended directly above the chest, then lowering the arms to each side until the stretch is felt in the chest before returning to the starting position.
